About this painting

Poet Emily Dickinson wrote “There’s a certain slant of light, Winter’s afternoon…” and, well, I’ve always loved that line. However, I tend to promptly forget the following lines, because I don’t really want to think about how that certain slant of light “oppresses, like the Heft Of Cathedral Tunes.”

One day I was painting one of my first abstracts, not having a clue what I was doing.  Most of the time I don’t have a clue what I’m doing.  And when I feel completely out of control and need to find inner peace, I call my brother, Micah. When he’s not home, I think back to the time he and I walked the Dumyat Hill near the Sheriffmuir Road (where Monty Python and the Holy Grail filmed the battle of the Aaarrrggghhh). We searched for sheep and the ever, elusive true cairns (not made by tourists), and I  listen to Micah’s song, Safe Harbour. His lyrics fill out the rest of the Dickinson poem in my head – the way I want.  I still don’t know what I’m doing.  But the calm washes over me and gives me safe harbor.

Safe Harbour
by Micah Gilbert

Turn around, walk away
You’ve got your memories
You’ve got your saving grace
No one can take that away
No one can know the things we save

Hear the sound of the falling leaves
Feel the wind on your face
Changing your shape
We learn from mistakes
But can’t know the hearts we take

There’s a light upon the bay
Guiding ships across the way
Theres a place you’ve known before
Let me offer up to you safe harbour

Feel the rising of the tide
See the clearing of the skies
Feel me standing by your side

Turn around, hear the sound of the rain
Hear the refrain
There’s more now to this game
We’ll give the best of ourselves
When we give it all away

There’s a light upon the bay
Guiding ships across the way
Theres a place you’ve known before
Let me offer up to you safe harbour
