About this painting

I love paintings that have pears, so this is another in a series. Pears give me an anchor in my abstract paintings. Add a pear and you can add anything else. That’s the beauty of abstracts and pears.

My sister said that the squares looked like airplane windows, which is why the title is Flight 416. (416 was the address of my childhood house and is my default number.)

At first this painting seemed really frenetic and I tried to calm it down. Then I got mad at myself for trying to be so cautious so I said, “You know, go MORE frenetic!” So I added the arrows to help guide folks to look at this and that, and yes, this!

About this painting

I love paintings that have pears.  Apples are nice, bananas are interesting and strangely shaped, but pears just seem to be the perfect fruit to paint.  My only problem was that when I painted my pears, they seemed to be unbalanced. The painting needed something more.  I was listening to my bother’s song, Fly

Away when my sister called.  I had texted her a photo of my pear painting and said something was missing.  She said, “Add a bird.”  Probably if I had called my younger brother, he’d have told me to add a bagpipe, and it would have turned into an even different painting with a bird and renaissance bagpipes (because that the type he plays).  But for now… how about Fly Away.

Fly Away
by Micah Gilbert

Fly away
Let your cares fly
Watch them go
High and away
The wind and trees whisper they agree
The sun illuminates the day
Painted clouds, watercolour skies
And the morning calls us on our wayFly away
Let your cares fly
Watch them go
High and awayDragonflies fly by waterfalls
And they glide in on the breeze
Dew drops shining in the morning sun
And the wind is blowing through the treesFly away
Let your cares fly
Watch them go
High and away

Abstract Garden Painting – Jardin des Tuileries

The idea that one day our children will not be able to enjoy the lovely Jardin des Tuileries (Tuileries Garden) in Paris because America did not join in the agreement this year, astounds me. Astounds many Americans… astounds many citizens of the world. I had originally set out this year to paint the gardens of Paris (my old stomping grounds), but had put those paintings aside to work on some of my animal paintings. Until yesterday.

Then I pulled the garden paintings out and began to add the finishing touches. These paintings are dedicated to the French – for continuing to focus on the quality of life – which is what they do best – and to all Francophiles. My hope is that this painting will bring back the happy memories for those who have walked the gardens or cat napped on a bench or sailed a toy boat in the small pond… or for those who have not yet been but one day hope to go. What inspired this work? The French. And the Paris Agreement (Accord de Paris) – the climate change agreement between countries. Plain and simple.

Normally I paint on canvases. But I recently discovered archival paper. As I often move back and forth from DC to France, I needed to have art that was easy to move. Also, the quality of the paint is the same as that on canvas, but the shipping cost is vastly different. Although I can’t give up the canvas completely, the idea that cutting the cost for an art lover is a beautiful concept.

About this painting

This is a love song painting about a road that leads back home!

My brother, Micah wrote Long Time Coming Home when his wife, Suzanne had gone out of town for a conference (she’s a James Hogg scholar and professor at Stirling University).  When I first began painting this, it was an abstract. But soon the abstract turned into buildings.  And then Micah’s song came on and the road just happened.  Notice there is no “STOP” on this stop sign.  The road beckons to come on back home, without pause.

Long Time Coming Home
by Micah Gilbert

Knock on my door
Come and wake me from my sleep
Your yellow roses have haunted my dreams
It’s been too long for those memories to keep
They’ve been weighing down on me

Blow those cobwebs away
Pack that traveling case
It’s time to chase those blues awayThe winds will always blow
Rivers still will flow
But for now you know
You’ve been a long time coming home

So long ago
Underneath the evening sky
We stood watching for those northern lights
Paints a picture in my memory
Bring those nights on home to me

Shake the dust from my dreams
Send the moon on a chase
It’s time to wash those blues away

The winds will always blow
Rivers still will flow
But for now you know
You’ve been a long time coming home

The winds will always blow
Rivers still will flow
But for now you know
You’ve been a long time coming home

The winds will always blow
Rivers still will flow
But for now you know
You’ve been a long time coming home
